Michelle Williams plays Wendy, a woman hoping to start a new life with her dog Lucy. But when her car breaks down and she is arrested, Wendy finds herself homeless and unemployed. With Lucy missing, Wendy sets out to find the one thing left in her life.

• Director Kelly Reichardt was worried that Michelle Williams was too pretty to play the lead role. So she asked Williams not to wash her hair and to go without makeup for two weeks during filming.
• Lucy is director Kelly Reichhardt's own dog.
• Michelle Williams slept in her car for a few nights to get into her character.
• Michelle Williams did not shave her legs or clean her fingernails during filming. After filming was completed, Williams' friend treated her to a manicure and a pedicure.
