- This was the first French film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival since 1987. According to jury president Sean Penn, the choice was unanimous.
- The French title of this film, Entre les murs, translated into English means Between The Walls.
- This film was France's official submission to the Best Foreign Language film category at the 2008 Academy Awards.
- The students in this film were real schoolchildren who auditioned to be a part of the classroom. They all kept their real names in the film and often their real personalities.
