Film Trivia
- This film is based on the French play and film La Cage Aux Folles, and is set in Miami's South Beach
- Robin Williams was initially cast as Albert but he asked to switch to Armand because he wanted a break from playing flamboyant characters.
- Both Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are renowned for improvising. Because of this director Mike Nichols insisted that both of them film at least one take sticking to the script, before he would let them off the leash.
- Director Mike Nichols hired someone to film a documentary including interviews with drag-queens around the world. He then used this video to train Nathan Lane and Robin Williams for their roles.
- Because Mike Nichols was laughing so much during the toast scene he had to be covered by a sound proof blanket.
