A talented Dominican baseball player (Algenis Perez Soto) is given the chance to play in the US leagues. He jumps at the opportunity to earn enough money to support his family. But he finds adapting to the US a lot harder than he'd imagined.

• This marks the acting debut for Algenis Perez Soto who plays Miguel Santos. Originally from the Dominican Republic, this was his first visit to the US.
• While researching the film directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck went to the Dominican Republic. They interviewed baseball players to learn more about their personal experiences.
• Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck intended to give this film a documentary look. This is why everything is shot on location and mostly non-actors are used.
• Real Dominican league baseball players appear in this film as Miguel's teammates.
