• The main movie that this film is spoofing is Scream. Most of the characters in this film are modelled on characters from Scream and funnily enough, Scream's original title was set to be Scary Movie.
• James Van Der Beek who stars in Dawson's Creek has a brief cameo in this movie playing himself.
• Anna Faris' characters name, Cindy Campbell, is a play on the name Sidney, from the Scream Trilogy. It is also a reference to the actress Neve Campbell, who plays Sidney.
• Shannon Elizabeth plays a character named Buffy, who is based on Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Sarah Michelle Gellar also played the lead role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
• The first victim in this movie is named Drew. This is a reference to Scream, in which the second victim is played by Drew Barrymore. The scene and killing is identical to that in Scream.
