Political humorist Bill Maher interviews Muslims, Christians and Jews as he examines the absurdity of religion. Maher's goal is to show that having faith and seeking direction from God is actually a mental disorder.

• This film used the fake working title A Spiritual Journey in order to obtain interviews with religious leaders.
• This film was originally set to be released in time for Easter 2008. But the 2007 Writer's Guild strike caused delays in post-production.
• Director Larry Charles was also the director and writer of a number of episodes of the hit US television series' Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
