Film Trivia

• Robert De Niro read Jake LaMotta's autobiography in 1974 and it took him six years to get the film made. Martin Scorsese only connected with the material once he had fallen into his own spiral of self-destruction after overdosing on cocaine.
• To achieve the feeling of brotherhood between the two actors, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci lived and trained together before making the film. Ever since then the two have remained good friends and frequently star in films together.
• Jake asks Joey 'Did you f**k my wife?'. Martin Scorsese didn't think Joe Pesci's reaction was strong enough so he asked Robert De Niro to say 'Did you f**k your mother?'. Pesci's surprised reaction in the film is genuine.
• Robert De Niro gained a record 60 pounds to play the older Jake LaMotta. His movie weight-gain record was subsequently broken by Vincent D'Onofrio who gained 70 pounds for his role in Full Metal Jacket.
• When the real Jake LaMotta watched this film he said it made him realise for the first time what a terrible person he was. When he asked his wife 'Was I really like that?', she replied 'You were worse'.
