- This film is based on the best-selling book by John Grogan who turned newspaper articles about his dog into a memoir. He has a cameo in this film as a Cocker Spaniel owner in the dog training class.
- 22 different dogs were used to play Marley.
- Owen Wilson's real parents play his parents in this movie. His mother found it hard to remember not to call him Owen.
- Kathleen Turner, who starred in this movie also played Chandler Bing's cross-dressing father Charles in the hit US television series Friends, which also starred Jennifer Aniston.
- Jennifer Aniston said that the hardest scene to shoot in this film was the scene where Marley is taken to get neutered because the dog was playing up.
