>Directed by Clement Virgo, the screenplay is based upon a novel by his partner Tamara Berger. The aim of the film was to highlight the differences between love and lust.

>The film is perhaps most controversial for its depictions of sex with much debate over whether the act was simulated or done for real. The actors for the record have refused to comment, but it alarmed many critics upon its release.

>Virgo said that he was heavily inspired by classic Jean Vigo French film ‘L’Atalante’, which he used as the basis for characterisation of the two leads. A poster of the film can also be seen in David’s room.

>Lead actors Lauren Lee Smith and Eric Balfour are best known for their roles in top US television shows. Smith came to prominence in superhero drama ‘Mutant X’ and is now in lesbian drama ‘The L Word’. Balfour was also in a number of series including ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘24’ and ‘Six Feet Under’.
