Film Trivia

  • Because he wasn't happy with all of his character's dialogue Marlon Brando improvised most of his lines.
  • Jean-Pierre Leaud, who stars as the bland filmmaker Tom, had so much respect for Marlon Brando that he was afraid to meet him. Because of this he only filmed his scenes on Saturdays, the day that Marlon Brando refused to work.
  • According to Maria Schneider the famous butter scene in this movie was added at the last minute by Marlon Brando and Bernardo Bertolucci. Her tears in the scene are real.
  • Marlon Brando claims he refused to do a nude scene in this film because his penis would shrink to the size of a peanut.
  • Originally this film was to be about an affair between two homosexuals but when the original French actor pulled out the story was changed.
