When he is accused of stealing a pair of trainers, Shia LaBeouf is sent to a work camp in the desert. The camp's warden forces him to dig holes in the desert and he is soon involved in a fun-filled treasure hunt. Co stars Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight.

• Frankie Muniz was originally cast as Stanley, but when he dropped out Shia LaBeouf stepped in.
• Sigourney Weaver wanted to star in this film because Holes is her daughter's favourite book.
• Before filming Patricia Arquette did not know how to ride a horse. She had to learn for her role as Kissing Kate Barlow.
