- Director Alfonso Cuaron asked the three young leads to write an essay about how they viewed their characters, before filming began. Emma Watson produced 16 pages while Rupert Grint made his excuses and didn't write anything.
- The special effects team spent six months creating the Dementors. Director Alfonso Cuaron didn't want to use CGI and experimented with slow-motion movement and underwater puppets. Ultimately, it was thought that CGI would be the easiest way.
- This film was offered to Guillermo del Toro but he decided to direct Hellboy instead.
- Aware of his fondness for music, Gary Oldman presented Daniel Radcliffe with a bass guitar as a gift when they first met.
