Dana (Steve Coogan) is a failed actor who becomes a drama teacher and wants to produce Hamlet 2 with his high school class. The school administration and the community think it is politically incorrect and offensive, but for Dana the show must go on.

- Dana was originally British, but Steve Coogan said that he couldn't believe a British person would be as energetic as his character is in the film. So the character was changed to a Canadian.
- Elisabeth Shue stars as a fictionalised version of herself in this movie. In the film she has given up acting and now works as a nurse.
- Screenwriter Pam Brady says she was inspired to write the musical number Rock Me, Sexy Jesus after watching a Madonna concert. Madonna crucified herself on stage and Brady said she thought it was tasteless and desperate.
