A German professor (Viggo Mortensen) writes an autobiographical book about euthanasia. But while the novel is praised by his peers, it is also adopted by the new government and he finds himself caught up with the Nazi Party. Co stars Jason Isaacs.

• Romola Garai was cast as Anna, the female lead, but backed out at the last minute to spend more time at university. Jodie Whittaker later replaced her.
• This film is based on the play of the same name by C.P. Taylor. In 1981 Viggo Mortensen saw the play performed and fell in love with it.
• Jason Isaacs, who stars as Maurice, is most famous for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.
• Viggo Mortensen claims that this film is not like most holocaust films in that it doesn't just concentrate on the Germans but more on individuals who don't pay attention to what they know to be true.
