Mariah Carey stars as Billie, a girl growing up in a tough neighbourhood who dreams of becoming a star. She gets her big break when a tape of her singing is heard by a DJ. She starts a relationship with him but must deal with fame and heartbreak.

• While filming, tracks using Mariah Carey's backup singer were used in place of Carey's voice to avoid bootlegging. Carey recorded her vocals close to the release date of the soundtrack and all lead vocals used in the film are hers.
