- Initially Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and John Hurt were set to star in this film. But McGregor broke his leg in a biking accident and was forced to withdraw. Eva Green remained the only member of the original cast.
- This film marks the directorial debut for British filmmaker Gerald McMorrow.
- Director Gerald McMorrow was inspired to make this film while staying in Mexico City. There was a shopping centre nearby that had religious paraphernalia in all of the windows, which led McMorrow to speculate about a society dominated by religion.
- Ryan Phillippe's character wears a mask in this movie. Phillippe has said that it was extremely uncomfortable to wear and he picked up an eye infection due to something being lodged in the eyehole.
- Ryan Phillippe's one regret about making this film is that he did not get to spend a lot of time with the other actors due to their individual narratives.
