Jim Varney's likeable but accident prone character Ernest stands in when Santa Claus travels to America to find a replacement. But when Santa accidentally ends up in jail, it is up to Ernest to save Christmas.

• During filming, the reindeers started to shed their antlers. Because of this replacement antlers had to be obtained.
• The Orlando Children's Museum featured in this movie was actually the Orlando Science Center.
• Jim Varney starred in a number of Ernest movies but sadly passed away at the age of 50.
