Katey (Romola Garai) is an American girl living in Cuba with her parents. She meets Javier (Diego Luna), a local, who takes her to a nightclub where the two grow closer as he teaches her to dance Cuban-style.

• This film is loosely based on the life of this film's producer, JoAnn Fregalette Jansen, who moved to Cuba with her family in the 50s.
• Diego Luna, who plays Javier, had no experience of dancing before making this film. He learned the dances required for the movie six weeks before filming began.
• Although set in Cuba this film was shot entirely in Puerto Rico.
• Natalie Portman and Ricky Martin were the first choices to play Katey and Javier.
• Patrick Swayze makes a cameo appearance in this movie as a dance instructor.
