Lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is hired to coach the junior ice hockey team for a major international tournament. With a team that includes a female goalkeeper and a figure skater, he prepares to compete against the Icelandic world champions.

• When one of the junior hockey players, Dwayne, is introduced he says 'It's a great day for hockey'. This is a tribute to Bob Johnson, a former coach and USA Hockey executive who would greet his players everyday in that way.
• Coach Bombay makes the team do sprints after their first match against Iceland. This is based on the 1980 US Olympic team who skated for an hour after the rink's lights had been switched off.
• Kenan Thompson, who plays Russ Tyler, starred as Kenan in the hit television show Kenan and Kel.
• Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky has a small cameo in this movie.
