Serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) is killed in a shootout with the police. But his soul ends up trapped in a child's doll called Chucky. Desperate to become human again, he goes on a bloodthirsty rampage targeting a six-year-old boy.

• Chucky's full name, Charles Lee Ray, is based on three notorious figures in America's history. It is derived from the names of Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray.
• Brad Dourif recorded his lines in advance so that they could match Chucky's mouth movements to the words. Because of this Dourif was never on set during scenes with the doll and so recordings of his lines were played back to six-year-old Alex Vincent
• For the scene where Chucky runs after Maggie in the hallway, Chucky was played by Alex Vincent's younger sister.
• Screenwriter Don Mancini claims that in one of the first versions of his script he toyed with the audience for a bit longer to make them question whether or not Andy was the killer.
