Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a beautiful retired courtesan. For years she has been in love with Cheri (Rupert Friend), the son of her old colleague and rival (Kathy Bates). But they are forced to separate when Cheri's mother arranges for him to be married.

• This film is based on the novels Cheri and The Last Of Cheri by French author Colette.
• Director Stephen Frears personally asked Danish actress Iben Hjejle to be in this film. She agreed and had no idea she would be starring opposite big Hollywood names until she began filming her first scene.
• When this film was in development during the 1990s, Jessica Lange was lined up to star as Lea.
