Part one of Steven Soderbergh's biopic of the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara (Benicio Del Toro). Che is an important figure in the rebellion led by Fidel Castro. The two men build an underground army big enough to overthrow Batista's government.
Film Trivia
- Benicio Del Toro chose Ryan Gosling to play Beni Ramirez in this film. Gosling met with the real Ramirez and learned Spanish in preparation for the part but delays during pre-production forced Gosling to drop out.
- Steven Soderbergh used the newly developed RED lightweight digital camera to shoot this film. He described the process as being 'like hearing The Beatles for the first time'.
- The scene where Che takes a cannon from his comrade who keeps missing and blows up the barracks with his first shot was originally meant to show Che missing the target on the first shot. But the crew were losing light so they had him get it in one.
- Steven Soderbergh believes that people need to watch Che: Part One and Che: Part Two back to back if they want the full experience. However with a combined running time of four and a half hours he understands this isn't possible for many people.
- Jsu Garcia, who plays the part of Jorge Sotus in this film, also starred as Che Guevara in Andy Garcia's The Lost City.
