Virginia Madsen is writing a thesis about local legends. When she begins investigating the hook-wielding maniac Candyman (Tony Todd), a series of brutal murders take place. She ignored the warnings but now she will discover that the legend is true.

• Virginia Madsen has claimed that she was hypnotised for some of the scenes in this film.
• Virginia Madsen is allergic to bees and so an ambulance was always on stand by while filming the bee sequence.
• Some scenes were filmed at the infamous Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago. The producers had to make a deal with the local gang leaders to include them in the movie as extras, if they in return would ensure the safety of the cast and crew.
• There is a Guy Fawkes mask hanging up by Helen's bathroom mirror. Like Fawkes, Candyman became who he is because he was burnt to death.
• Real bees were placed in Tony Todd's mouth for the film's climactic scene. His only protection was a mouth guard that stopped the bees going down his throat.
