Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) heads to Nebraska on the run from the police. She wants to be accepted as a man and so reinvents herself as Brandon Teena. She falls in love with local girl Lana (Chloe Sevigny) with tragic results.

• To prepare for her role Hilary Swank lived as a man for a month, stuffing socks down the front of her trousers and taping her chest up. She was so convincing that her neighbours thought she was her brother.
