Students decide to investigate the woods haunted by the Blair Witch. They camp near the house of a notorious child murderer, but in the morning have no memory of the night before. As they try to piece things together they uncover an unspeakable horror.

• The main characters in this film are named after the actors who play them.
• Director Joe Berlinger asked all the main cast members to watch horror movies about demonic possession and satanic rituals to prepare them for their roles.
• There are numerous references to other horror films in this film. The barking dogs are a reference to The Omen, the tape playing backwards is a reference to The Exorcist and Erica spinning around the tree is a reference to Evil Dead II.
• An owl appears in several scenes. In some cultures the owl signifies death.
