- Leonardo DiCaprio turned down the role of Camerlengo Patrick McKenna despite the fact that it was personally offered to him by Tom Hanks.
- St. Peter's Square was recreated at two thirds the size on a stretch of land at the Hollywood Park racetrack.
- Ayelet Zurer didn't read Dan Brown's novel until after filming was complete. She has said that she feels her portrayal of Vittoria Vetra is identical to the way Brown described her.
- Clint Eastwood expressed interest in directing this film but Ron Howard was given preference as he had directed The Da Vinci Code.
