• Hugh Grant had to learn how to play the guitar for his role as Will. He was taught by musical director Paul Englishby.
• Brad Pitt turned down the role of Will. He believed that it was unrealistic that someone as attractive as Will would have to pose as a single father to meet women.
• Hugh Grant has said that of all the movies he has acted in, this is his favourite.
• This film was based on the novel of the same name by Nick Hornby. Hornby is an Arsenal football club supporter and the team's flag can be seen in Ali's bedroom.
• At the beginning of the film Marcus says that he would be able to take care of his mum (Toni Collette) if he was Haley Joel Osment. Toni Collette played Haley Joel Osment's mother in The Sixth Sense.
